Olive oil tree appeared in the Mediterranean area before thousand years and from there was spread in the surrounding countries.

It is believed that from Neolithic era in the Aegean cosmos between other edible fruits and seeds there was also the collection of the fruits of wild olive tree ( Olea europea oleaster). The oldest samples of pollen of olive oil tree are dated back in the end of Neolithic era and come from Crete and Voiotia.

In the islands of Nisyros, Kymi and Santorini there were found petrified leaves of European olive tree that are dated back 50.000 years.

Greek mythology refers to the olive tree as a gift of goddess Athena during a competition between her and god Poseidon for naming the city after their names. According to mythology Poseidon hitted with his trident the holy rock of Acropolis and immediately springed up a wave of salty water which later was named “Erechthiyda” sea. When Athena hitted the holy rock with her stick there was sprang an olive tree full of olives which was considered as a promise for glory and prosperity of the city.

Scientific searches have shown that olive oil:
